HSE University is pleased to announce the relaunch of its popular webinar series, Megacities of the future 2:0. New Challenges. The series focuses on issuesof modern urban development and is team taught by HSE University professors and lecturers from different faculties. The webinars consider urban developmental issues through the lenses of a range of fields, including Arts and Design, Computer Science, Electronics, Mathematics and Communication Systems, Economics and Management, Urban Studies, and Russian Studies.

On October 2-4, HSE University hosted the international conference Trends in Logic 19. Current Issues in Philosophical Logic for the first time in Russia. The conference, which attracted a number of prominent Russian and international scholars, was organized jointly by the journal Studia Logica and the HSE International Laboratory for Logic, Linguistics and Formal Philosophy.

Registration for the Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project for international applicants to Russian Master’s programmes is open until December 18. The competition consists of two online rounds. The first round is a portfolio competition.

On October 6, for the first time, Moscow hosted the Kyokushin Karate World Cup. The world tournament brought together athletes from more than 30 countries. HSE University participated in the event as one of the tournament’s newest official partners.

On October 2 and 3, HSE University simultaneously celebrated two anniversaries of Russian-Dutch academic cooperation: the 25th anniversary of joint educational programmes between HSE University and Erasmus University Rotterdam, and the 10th anniversary of the Dutch educational center, Nuffic Neso Russia, with which HSE has a long-standing partnership.

Anna Berti Suman, PhD candidate at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) of Tilburg University and Visiting Researcher at the European Commission Joint Research Center (JRC), recently spent a week at HSE’s Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism as a Visiting Lecturer. Anna led two seminars and participated in a public round table, entitled ‘Law, Data and the City’. HSE News Service spoke with her about the seminars, the round table, and her impressions of Moscow.

Begun in September, the joint project of HSE University and Moscow’s Polytechnic Museum traditionally lasts until May. HSE News Service attended some classes of the university, where we learned, alongside the university’s young students, how to cross a tightrope without falling, what the nature of mutations is, and how the Russian language is structured.

HSE psychologists have studied how the presence or absence of siblings, as well as birth order, affect children’s ability to maintainpersonal boundaries. The results showed that only children and second-born children have the strongest sense of personal boundaries, while first-born children have the least. However, as children become adults, their ability to balance between their own needs and those of others becomes determined more by gender.
