Christian Julliard: ‘A Researcher Knows “Yesterday”, Understands “Today” And Foresees “Tomorrow”’
All last week Christian Julliard, a Lecturer in the Department of Finance at the London School of Economics (LSE) and the coordinator of the International Laboratory of financial economics at ICEF/HSE, was working in Moscow. This time the goals of his visit were to take part in seminars with ICEF research colleagues and being an external examiner for the MSc program in Financial Economics, as well as advice his colleagues on their research trajectories. Our reporter had a chance to meet with the scholar and talk about his background, interests and Russian impressions.
New Standards and New Departments
On June 24th this year’s final session of the HSE Academic Council took place at the HSE, where original educational standards and new editions of educational procedures were approved and new departments of the university were founded.
‘We Shall Discuss the Key Problems of Public Administration’
On June 28th and 29th an international academic conference ‘Improving the Effectiveness of Public Services’ will take place at the HSE. The co-organizer of the conference is the international Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) which is holding its annual external conference in Russia for the first time. Alexey Barabashev, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Public Administration, spoke to us about the conference.
American Practices for Russian Innovations
In early June a HSE delegation visited the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Arizona, Tucson. The host universities are partners of the HSE in the Innovative Infrastructure Development Programme.
Double Degree is Double Value
On June 2nd the double degree master’s programme of the HSE Faculty of Public Administration and the London Metropolitan University Department of Law, Governance and International Relations was validated. Elena Guseletova, Head of this project and Head of the HSE International Educational and Research Center of Public Administration Department of International Cooperation, told us about this process and the new programme.

Internationally Renowned Researchers Attracted to the HSE
On June 15th two new international laboratories which are part of the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge, the Laboratory for Economics of Innovation headed by Ian Miles, and the Laboratory for Science and Technology Studies headed by Jean Guinet, were presented at the HSE.
GMC: the HSE Team Takes 5th Place in the Final Competition
Global Management Challenge 2011, an international championship in company management has finished in Macao, where about thirty teams from national qualifying championships took part. The HSE student team took 5th place in the final competition. Just back from Macao, the team members shared their impressions of the contest.
International Laboratories as Part of the Development Strategy
In late 2010 – early 2011 international research laboratories which are jointly headed by prominent international researchers and leading experts of the university started their work at the Higher School of Economics.
