Applied Projects and Deep Fakes: How Computer Vision Is Taught at HSE University
Applications for the HSE University Master of Computer Vision, the only English-language online computer vision programme in Russia, are open until August 10. The programme has been developed by researchers of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod together with researchers in the field of computer vision from leading companies in the industry: Huawei, Itseez3D, Intel, Harman, Xperience.ai, Sber, Newstream and Deelvin Solutions. Andrey Savchenko, Academic Supervisor of the programme and Professor at the Department of Information Systems and Technologies, told the HSE News Service about how teaching competencies in the field of computer vision changes our view of the world.

HSE Researchers Develop New Method for Analysing Genetic Admixture of Populations
Researchers of the HSE International Laboratory of Statistical and Computational Genomics together with their international colleagues have proposed a new statistical method for analysing population admixture that makes it possible to determine the time and number of migration waves more accurately. The history of Colombians and Mexicans (descendants of Native Americans, Spaniards and Africans) features two episodes of admixture that occurred about 350 and 200 years ago for Mexicans and 400 and 100 years ago for Colombians. The results were published in the Plos Genetics journal.

‘We Want to Share Our Research with the Whole World’
The HSE University Faculty of Chemistry opened three years ago, and its first intake of undergraduate students is set to graduate in 2023. These students have already demonstrated impressive results in their research—half of second and third-year students have publications in journals indexed in WoS and Scopus, almost a third of which are in Q1 journals. Andrey Yaroslavtsev, Head of the Chemistry programme and Academic of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), told the HSE University News Service about the secret of this success.

On July 18, the graduation ceremony for Master’s students in Corporate Research, Development and Innovation Management took place to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the programme’s launch. The students were able not only to receive their diplomas, sample delicious cake and take pictures, but also to mingle with graduates from previous years.

HSE Faculty of Computer Science Celebrates its First Graduates of the Data Science and Business Analytics Programme
At the beginning of July, the Data Science and Business Analytics programme at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science held its first graduation ceremony. Most graduates have already found jobs in various fields—Data Science, development, product management, systems analysis, and so on. Many of the bachelors plan to continue their studies at the best international and Russian universities, but they are not going to say goodbye. ‘We have been and will always be one big team,’ they say.

Study Helps Explain Why Students Cheat
Evgeniia Shmeleva and Egor Sagitov of the HSE Institute of Education examined the relationship between how study sessions are designed and the likelihood of students’ cheating. They found students more inclined to cheat when expected to learn by rewriting and retelling the study material and more likely to be honest when engaged in interactive learning activities such as debates.
